ABOUT

Sylvia Nevistic is an Australian artist living and working on Wadawurrung country Ballarat, located in the central goldfields of Victoria. Her practice crosses over craft and the visual arts, with work that is nuanced and detail driven. Using a visual and ornamental language borrowed from ancient objects and the natural ecology, Sylvia creates work that attempts to pique one’s curiosity, often blurring the lines between reality and imagination. She unpicks threads of ideas that come out of her own experiences, conversations, written word, museum visits, observation, and time spent in Nature, translating these explorations into objects that are imbued with a sense of emotion and wonder.

Sylvia has been a practicing jeweller and object maker since 1997, she is an alumni of the JamFactory Centre for Contemporary Craft and Design in Adelaide where she was a tenant and taught numerous classes in jewellery making. During her residency at the JamFactory she also attended various workshops and masterclasses with notable contemporaries such as Junko Mori and Nancy Megan Corwin. In 2018 Sylvia was the recipient of an Individual Development Grant from Arts South Australia, which provided an opportunity to travel internationally to undertake an intensive course learning the traditional technique of granulation with Goldsmith Giovanni Corvaja in Italy. While there, she travelled to Rome and Florence to research historical jewellery and porcelain, ending her trip in Milan to present examples of her work. In 2025, Sylvia won the nationally significant Contemporary Wearables Jewellery Award with her piece “To have and to hold”. This piece is now part of the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery permanent collection.

Sylvia has spent many years making jewellery commissions for private clients while teaching workshops and classes. She is currently focusing on further developing her art practice.
